“People who practice black magic,” the locals said. At least, that was the reason they gave behind the unexplained bodies turning up all over the city—burned and left on public display. The problem was, no one knew who they were, or why the authorities seemed increasingly unwilling to find answers.

For FBI Agent Kartika “Vic” Sutera, returning home with strict orders not to get involved, this was going to be a problem. Desperate to prove she belonged in the field, Vic saw the murders as an opportunity. Were the killings gang-related, or the work of a foreign clandestine network attempting to destabilize Hantuan—or something else?

As the violence escalates and a military crackdown meant to restore order plunges Hantuan deeper into chaos, Vic must navigate a labyrinth of secrets in a world where she can no longer trust the authorities, the people around her, or even herself.

But the deeper she digs, the further back her investigation goes, leading her to a group of missionary sisters and their mysterious disappearance decades earlier. Were they spies, secretly supporting a plot to overthrow the government—or were they trying to solve one of the oldest epistemological problems in human history?

To escape Hantuan alive, Vic must discover whether there is a conspiracy to hide proof that the supernatural exists—and if it does, why nobody else knows about it.
